Taipei City’s Public Transportation Office announced today that to further develop public transit infrastructure, it will install smart bus stops at 12 locations without access to low-voltage power sources. By September 1, two types of solar-powered smart bus stops—one solely solar-powered and another incorporating both solar and hand-crank power—will be deployed, with locations to be finalized soon. The office explained that in addition to relying on solar power as the primary energy source, the hand-crank powered version allows passengers to manually generate electricity for real-time use. When fully charged, the bus stop can function for up to 14 days without sunlight. Additionally, the display can show up to four bus routes simultaneously with rotating updates.

Public transportation goes greener! Taipei City’s Public Transportation Office announced today (1st) the pilot launch of two types of off-grid clean-energy smart bus stops. One of them, the solar and hand-crank powered smart bus stop, allows passengers to generate power for the display by manually turning a crank—a fun and eco-friendly feature that encourages physical activity while waiting for the bus! To further develop public transit infrastructure, Taipei City is actively expanding smart bus stop installations. However, due to a lack of electricity in some areas, full implementation remains a challenge. As a solution, the office is currently testing two self-sustaining models: the "solar and hand-crank powered smart bus stop" and the "solar-powered smart bus stop."
